Two of the Largest Consumers of Electricity in Irvine Have Already “Opted-Out” of the Orange County Power Authority

On April 1st, all businesses in Irvine were transferred from their current provider of electricity, Southern California Edison (SCE), and enrolled in the new Orange County Power Authority (OCPA).

The OCPA promised to deliver cleaner electricity at lower rates. However, that promise was broken as soon as rates were released. Both residential and commercial customers in Irvine will see an increase in their electricity costs once they are enrolled in the new OCPA plan.

Two of the largest consumers of electricity in Irvine have signaled their lack of confidence in the OCPA by opting-out.

According to an article in the Voice of OC, the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) and the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) say that their organizations — which spend tens of millions of dollars on electricity each year — never received the legally-mandated notification from OCPA and that their questions concerning the new OCPA plans were never answered.

Turmoil Engulfs Embattled Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan

As publisher of Irvine Community News & Views, from time to time I feel the need to weigh-in personally on important community matters.

Recently, the Voice of OC and Irvine Watchdog have reported on a disturbing 2020 video that has surfaced showing Mayor Farrah Khan attending an event with members of the Turkish community.

In the video, Mayor Khan is seen joking with Ergun Kirlikovali — a notorious Armenian Genocide denier — about making Armenians “disappear.”

Not only did Khan joke with Kirlikovali about making Armenians disappear, the video shows her telling the group that she stands with the Turkish community “no matter what.”

Khan then appointed Kirlikovali to her newly-formed Mayor’s Advisory Council and has been seen at a number of events with Kirlikovali by her side.

Welcome to the Veterans Corner!

My name is Frank McGill. I am an Air Force veteran and Chair of the Veterans for the ARDA Site Cemetery organization, representing more than 2,000 Orange County veterans and their families.

If you have followed the saga of the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery over the years, you know that there have been endless efforts to move our promised Veterans Cemetery from the ARDA site — the site overwhelmingly preferred and approved by Irvine veterans and voters.

The latest proposed site is 20 miles outside of Irvine, near the Riverside County line.

The City’s Transportation Panel Backs Pedestrian Bridge at Jamboree and Alton

On March 15th, the Irvine Transportation Commission approved the location of a second pedestrian bridge over Jamboree Boulevard — this bridge at Alton Parkway. The first bridge over Jamboree Boulevard — at Michelson Drive — will soon be under construction.

Both bridges, plus up to two more in the coming years, are in the Irvine Business Complex (IBC) and are a start on fulfilling some of the resident-oriented improvements outlined in the 2010 “urban village” Vision Plan for the area. The traffic portion of that plan was updated in 2020.

The bridge at the Alton location, which would provide a link to the Diamond Jamboree Shopping Center, was recommended after extensive consultations with residents, business and property owners, the City’s public safety agencies, and other stakeholders.
