Twin brothers Keyon and Ryan Namdar, both freshmen at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine, offer a free tutoring service for underserved students that combines the brothers’ passion for soccer and teaching math.
The twin’s community service camp, called “A Numbers Game: Discovering Math Through Soccer,” teaches math to elementary school students using an interactive curriculum outside of the classroom.
The Namdar brothers have been tutoring underserved elementary school students for the past two years. The twins say a common theme among their students is a lack of focus and a tendency to “zone out.” That realization triggered Keyon and Ryan to come up with a way of combining their years of playing soccer with teaching math concepts from a completely different perspective.
This year, the brothers will be using cones and soccer balls to teach math skills. Students attending their summer camp will start the day with a morning math session, followed by a fun outdoor soccer game, and end with small group soccer drills using cones and balls to reinforce the original math lesson.
Ryan said, “We hope this new engaging program reinforces math concepts on the soccer field, while making learning fun and exciting.”
Keyon and Ryan will be expanding their summer camp this year thanks to a community service grant through the Dragon Kim Foundation, a local philanthropic nonprofit organization that supports groups trying to make a positive impact on their community.
The brothers are using the $5,000 grant to buy supplies for the camp — including soccer balls, soccer goals, notebooks, and calculators.
The Orange County Rescue Mission and Boys and Girls Club of Orange County will be hosting and supplying students for the summer math camp. The brothers anticipate teaching about 30 kids per week, starting in mid-July.

Residents of Turtle Rock, Keyon and Ryan Namdar have been playing soccer for the past six years with the local club team Strikers FC Irvine, where I currently coach.
On a personal note, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching both boys over the past few years and have seen firsthand their passion and determination on and off the field.
This new method of learning sounds like a great idea and I’m really proud of the work they are doing to serve the community.
Keyon told me, “Our future goal is to impact more students in our community by having people sponsor our program so that we can run the camp without needing an organization to host it. Ultimately, we want to increase our students’ love for learning and teach them that math can be learned outside of the classroom.”
