Irvine-Based Nonprofit Provides Over 1 Million Wheelchairs to Those in Need

by

The Irvine faith-based nonprofit, Free Wheelchair Mission, was established after its founder — Dr. Don Schoendorfer returned from a vacation in Africa.  After seeing a woman struggling to walk, Schoendorfer decided to use his background in engineering to build a few prototype wheelchairs to help those in developing countries access affordable wheelchairs.  The next thing he knew, the organization was taking off.

Free Wheelchair Mission has already delivered more than 1 million durable and cost-efficient wheelchairs to more than 93 developing countries around the world.

The organization’s ultimate goal is to provide wheelchairs to the estimated 75 million people globally who do not have the means to purchase one.

In addition to being headquartered in Irvine, many of the organization’s staff members live here.  The organization has proudly partnered with a number of corporate Irvine sponsors — including Advisors Mortgage, Capital Group, and LoanDepot.  They have also partnered with a number of churches across the country, including Mariners Church here in Irvine.

You can learn more about this organization by visiting their website at https://www.freewheelchairmission.org/
