Last October and November, during an amazing 28-day period, more than 19,000 Irvine residents signed a special petition circulated by hundreds of volunteers.  The petition campaign, launched by the citizens’ committee to Save the Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park, invoked the rarely used power of referendum enshrined in our local democracy.

Well, here we are: The very unpopular Zone Change Ordinance No. 17-08 — adopted by the City Council on a 3-to-2 vote at the behest of developer FivePoint — is now on the June 5th ballot, officially designated as “Measure B.”

“We call B.S.!”  That’s what high school senior Emma Gonzalez and other surviving teenagers of the Valentine’s Day mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida are saying to the “grownups” — to State legislators, the Governor, Members of Congress, and the President.
