Irvine’s New Public Library System

On August 3rd, the Heritage Park & University Park library branches reopened as part of the new Irvine Public Library system.

Last year, the Irvine City Council unanimously voted to transition library services from the Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL) and, instead, establish its own Irvine Public Library System.

Irvine taxpayers were contributing roughly $17 million to OCPL every year. However, the libraries operated by OCPL in Irvine were receiving only $5 million annually in services.

The City will save millions of taxpayer dollars; existing Irvine libraries are being expanded and modernized; and two or even three new Irvine libraries will be built in the years ahead.

Mayor Agran’s Plan to Make Irvine the “Greenest City in America”

Mayor Larry Agran is on a mission to make Irvine the “Greenest City in America.” Last year, Irvine was ranked among the top ten greenest cities in the nation. But Mayor Agran is pressing forward with a number of projects to make the City even greener.

Irvine’s park system is currently ranked the best in California and the second best in the entire nation, according to the Trust for Public Land. The Mayor’s team is now developing an Urban Forest Master Plan that will add thousands more trees which will be aesthetically pleasing while helping to provide shade, clean the air, and cool our City.

The Mayor also wants the City to establish a large-scale solar rooftop and battery storage program to help Irvine residents significantly save on their monthly electricity bills and reduce our overall City carbon footprint.

In addition, Mayor Agran is looking for new opportunities for the City to acquire more open space and expand Irvine’s free shuttle bus service.

Construction Begins for Irvine’s First Municipal Gymnasium

Land that could have been approved for a massive warehouse will now become home to a new 110,000-square-foot recreational facility in the Irvine Business Complex (IBC), at 17300 Red Hill Avenue.

The Irvine Fieldhouse — scheduled to open to the public next year — will become Irvine’s first municipal gym. Designed to meet residents’ needs, the facility will be equipped for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and serve as a hub for City-run programs, youth sports tournaments, and community events.

The Fieldhouse will include 10 multi-purpose courts, 10 badminton courts, a multipurpose room, a food court, and much more, as well as 369 parking spaces.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Larry Agran stated: “Together, we are building more than a gym. We are creating a space that brings our community together in meaningful ways, promotes health and well-being, and ensures we maintain an outstanding quality of life for residents.”
