An Unlikely Friendship is Formed in the Midst of the Pandemic

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of our lives, this past year has been especially difficult for many of our local seniors who have been stuck at home, alone. To help provide encouragement and hope, lots of our Irvine neighbors began dropping off cheerful cards and letters for residents at senior living communities.

Irvine Community News & Views has learned about one young letter-writer who has spent the past 15 months forming a real friendship with his pen pal at Regents Point senior living community. 89-year-old Bea Baker and 11-year-old Julian Abazajian have spent more than a year corresponding.

Safest City in America? Not for Those Living in North Irvine

For the past 15 years, Irvine has been recognized as “The Safest City in America” based on FBI data for violent crimes.

However, many residents in north Irvine will tell you that they do not feel safe in their own neighborhoods.

Not because of violent crime, but because the All American Asphalt Company operates a major plant in north Irvine that generates dangerous toxic emissions and noxious odors.

This Pool Season: One More Drowning is One Too Many

It’s that time of the year again — pool season!  As temperatures rise, there’s nothing more fun for kids to do than splash away in the nearest pool. However, we must also be aware of the dangers that come with access to swimming pools. 

Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death among children ages 1-4 here in Orange County.

Every year, we hear tragic stories about accidental drownings in backyard pools.  A 4-sided pool fence would prevent most of these tragedies from occurring.
