Are District Elections Coming to Irvine?

According to the City’s website, the Irvine City Council discussed an anticipated legal battle over district elections during their closed-door session on April 13th.

An at-large election system allows voters from across the City to elect all members of the City Council.  District elections would divide Irvine into geographic districts, with voters in each district electing their own City Councilmember, who must also live in that district.

Finding the Beat: UCI’s Jazz Studies

UCI’s Clair Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA) presented their second virtual “Jazz Small Groups Concert.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with faculty and students to get their perspectives on this past year.

Chancellor’s Professor of Jazz & Piano, Kei Akagi, said: “Although the students can’t bond with the audience right now, they’ve learned to find their own way to communicate with other players and the faculty.”  After attending their first concert, I think he’s correct.  It satisfied my craving for a breath of musical fresh air.

The Mayor’s Broken Promises

Last year, Farrah Khan campaigned for Mayor of Irvine, promising to bring transparency, ethics, and democratic values to City Hall.  In just the first few months in office, she’s broken those promises.

Upon taking office, Khan implemented an anti-democratic rule to restrict members of the Council from adding any item to the agenda without first obtaining a second Councilmember’s signature.  (The rule does not apply to Khan, as Mayor.)
