Students Powering Scotty Hong’s Council Campaign

In the Nov. 3 election, residents living in the neighborhoods surrounding UCI, University Hills, and the Jamboree and MacArthur corridors will elect their very first City Council representative.

Two candidates are running for the new Council seat: Irvine’s Sustainability Commissioner Scotty Hong and at-large Councilmember Kathleen Treseder.

While Treseder floods the district with costly mailers, Scotty Hong is taking a different approach: building a truly grassroots campaign powered by people living in the district.

Hong, a 34-year-old public policy expert educated at Harvard and Cornell, has already drawn scores of UCI students to his campaign. In fact, they’ve established a “Students for Scotty” group on campus.

Irvine is the Third Best City in America to Raise a Family

The financial services company WalletHub has released its 2026 list of Best Places to Raise a Family, and Irvine is ranked third best in America.

The report compared more than 180 U.S. cities using 45 key metrics across five factors: family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability, and socioeconomic factors.

Irvine’s abundance of family-friendly activities, world-class medical facilities, quality education and child care programs, high-paying jobs, outstanding parks and trails, and thriving community programs were among the many factors contributing to the City’s third-place ranking.

Mayor Agran Addresses Food & Nutrition Insecurity

Since taking office in December 2024, Mayor Larry Agran has worked to make Irvine safer, smarter, greener, healthier, and kinder.

The City’s achievements reflect that ambition. Irvine was recently named “America’s Safest Big City” for the 21st consecutive year and Irvine ranks among the nation’s top 10 smartest, greenest, and healthiest cities.

But for Mayor Agran, building a strong community also means bringing people together to tackle challenges that reach beyond city boundaries. Food insecurity is one of them. After being sworn in as Irvine’s Mayor, Agran joined the National Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger. Throughout the year, he heads into the fields at Harvest Solutions Farm, where he joins hundreds of local volunteers in harvesting tens of thousands of pounds of fresh produce.

Endorsements: Larry Agran for Mayor & Scotty Hong for City Council

In the Nov. 3 election, ICNV endorses Mayor Larry Agran for re-election.

Agran’s visionary leadership was responsible for preserving 10,000 acres of open space; building thousands of affordable housing units; shutting down the City’s largest industrial polluter and replacing it with a new 700-acre Gateway Preserve; and establishing Irvine’s park system (ranked No. 1 in California).

For the first City Council election in District 6, ICNV endorses Scotty Hong.

In just the past few years, Hong has built an impressive record of accomplishment — including the successful implementation of the Irvine Urban Forest Master Plan, the expansion of the City’s free green transit shuttle bus system (Irvine CONNECT), and the City’s expanded solar rooftop and battery storage program.

Professional Baseball Team Coming to Irvine

The Irvine City Council has approved a five-year agreement with Innovation Baseball Partners (IBP) to bring a professional baseball team to the Great Park Championship Baseball Stadium beginning next summer.

The new, yet-to-be-named team will join IBP’s three other teams that compete in the Pioneer Baseball League, an official partner league of Major League Baseball.

City officials estimate the partnership will generate just over $365,000 in annual revenue for the Great Park.

Community organizations and local teams, including the OC Riptide summer collegiate baseball team, will continue to have access to the stadium.

The City also began building a 700-acre nature preserve, announced that a new professional baseball franchise would come to the Great Park next summer, and began construction on restaurants, museums, botanical gardens, and Veterans Memorial Park at the Great Park.

Kathleen Treseder’s Disturbing Attacks on Her Critics

In addition to breaking nearly every campaign promise she made in 2022, what I find most disturbing — and dangerous — about Kathleen Treseder is her long-documented history of attacking those who disagree with her.

In 2024, she wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars by claiming that she had received death threats. The Irvine Police Department investigated and determined she was lying.

The Irvine Community Land Trust removed Treseder as a board member after she conditioned her support for a new affordable housing project on the removal of a director she disliked, then she stopped attending meetings after the Board refused her demand. A day after her removal, Treseder viciously attacked the Land Trust during an Irvine City Council meeting.

These are not two isolated instances.

Hong vs. Treseder: Skyrocketing Electricity Bills Top Concern in City Council Election

In the upcoming Nov. 3 election, one of the top concerns among voters is skyrocketing electricity bills.

Irvine Sustainability Commissioner Scotty Hong, a public policy expert, is running in District 6. He wants the City to get out of the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) — which charges Irvine customers the highest monthly rates in Orange County for electricity generated primarily from fossil fuels. Hong wants to invest in verifiable, real-world solutions to the climate crisis.

Hong’s opponent, at-large Councilmember Kathleen Treseder, has made the defense of OCPA her top campaign priority. Despite three failed audits and soaring monthly electricity rates, Treseder continues to boast that she will always support OCPA “no matter what.”

Residents Encouraged to Help Expand Irvine’s Urban Forest

Mayor Larry Agran’s vision to make Irvine the greenest city in America builds on decades of leadership. His early efforts helped establish Irvine’s renowned park system — now ranked No. 1 in California and No. 2 in the entire nation — and launched a goal to plant 500,000 trees citywide.

Today, Irvine has approximately 550,000 trees and a 22 percent tree canopy. Building on that legacy, the City is now working toward a 30 percent canopy by 2055.

To help reach that goal, the City has launched two new programs giving residents opportunities to grow Irvine’s urban forest.

JOST Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge is Open

On August 11th, hundreds of cyclists, walkers, and four-legged companions crossed the I-5 Freeway as the new Jeffrey Open Space Trail (JOST) Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge officially opened.

The 15-foot-wide, 1,200-foot-long bridge is Irvine’s largest pedestrian bridge, connecting the Jeffrey Road Park & Ride Lot with Walnut Avenue and closing a major gap in the City’s trail network.

Made possible in part by $14.5 million in state funding, the bridge represents another step toward Irvine’s vision of an interconnected trail system that could eventually stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana Mountains and Cleveland National Forest.
