Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Asphalt Company

Since 2019, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has reported more than 800 complaints from Irvine residents. Beyond the noxious odors, there are growing concerns about the adverse health effects from the plant’s toxic emissions.

Unable to make tangible progress with the City of Irvine and AQMD, the homeowners have taken matters into their own hands by filing a class action lawsuit against the asphalt company.

Are District Elections Coming to Irvine?

According to the City’s website, the Irvine City Council discussed an anticipated legal battle over district elections during their closed-door session on April 13th.

An at-large election system allows voters from across the City to elect all members of the City Council.  District elections would divide Irvine into geographic districts, with voters in each district electing their own City Councilmember, who must also live in that district.

Homeowners Frustrated with Mayor & Council’s Refusal to Address Their Concerns Over Asphalt Plant

More than 2,500 Irvine residents have signed an online petition, demanding the City of Irvine address concerns raised by homeowners regarding the emissions from the All American Asphalt plant.  Beyond the noxious odors, there is growing evidence of adverse health effects from the plant’s toxic emissions.

During the 2020 City Council election campaign, now-Mayor Farrah Khan and now-Councilmember Tammy Kim promised Irvine voters that, if elected, they would use the power of the City to help the homeowners. However, since being sworn in to office, Khan and Kim have failed to deliver on that campaign promise.

UCI Professor Named California’s 74th Assembly District “Woman of the Year”

After reviewing 150 nominations, Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, whose district includes much of Irvine, has selected UCI Professor Barbara Finlayson-Pitts as Assembly District 74’s “Woman of the Year.”

Finlayson-Pitts is a Professor of Chemistry at UCI, who is also a researcher, mentor and community leader. She works on critical atmospheric research, and has authored/co-authored 180 scientific publications and two books on atmospheric chemistry.

Mayor Khan Attempts to Silence Councilman Agran’s Support for the Veterans Memorial Park

Just minutes before the Council was scheduled to hear a report regarding the status of the Veterans Memorial Park, Mayor Khan publicly announced that the Council had received a letter from an attorney suggesting that Councilman Larry Agran had a possible conflict of interest and, therefore, shouldn’t be allowed to comment on the Veterans Cemetery.

Irvine Community News & Views has learned that the letter Khan referenced was sent by a disgraced attorney who is currently barred from practicing law in the state of California.

Northwood High School Principal Receives Prestigious Award for Administrator Excellence

A group of Northwood High School staff members successfully nominated Dr. Leslie Roach who has been awarded the distinguished Marcus Foster Award for Administrator Excellence, which recognizes outstanding leadership and significant contributions to education by a school administrator.

The committee was so impressed by the sentiments expressed in the nomination letter of Dr. Roach that they’ve advanced her as a finalist for the State Administrator of the Year Award.
