Irvine High School’s varsity girls flag football team
Fall sports are off and running across the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD), with all five high schools launching their seasons in exciting fashion. From decisive victories to hard-fought contests, local teams are already making an impact across the field, court, pool, and cross-country course.
Irvine High School varsity girls flag football made a statement in its season opener, shutting out Capistrano Valley High School in a dominant 58-0 victory. The Vaqueros maintained their intensity from start to finish, keeping Capistrano Valley off the scoreboard.
Portola varsity boys football opened its season with an impressive 35-7 win over Woodbridge High School. The Bulldogs built their lead through the first three quarters, and senior quarterback Orion Suttle led the offense with a standout performance, completing 10 of 11 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
University varsity girls volleyball battled back for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Portola in its season opener. After Portola captured the first two sets, University rallied with renewed focus, winning the final three sets — including the decisive fifth — to secure the comeback win.
Northwood varsity boys water polo also began the season in the win column, edging Long Beach Poly High School 10-9. With an emphasis on strengthening its defense, the Timberwolves made key adjustments to individual matchups and successfully limited Long Beach Poly’s offensive attack.
The Woodbridge cross-country team faced some of Southern California’s top competition at the PR City Invitational at SilverLakes Sports Complex in Norco. In the Men’s 3 Miles Elite Showdown, senior Aidan Antonio delivered a first-place finish with a time of 14:06:08.
With the fall season underway, students, families, and fans can follow each team’s schedule and find featured games on their school’s website. Visit the athletics pages for information on upcoming matchups, locations and game times.
