Residents Encouraged to Help Expand Irvine’s Urban Forest

Mayor Larry Agran’s vision to make Irvine the greenest city in America builds on decades of leadership. His early efforts helped establish Irvine’s renowned park system — now ranked No. 1 in California and No. 2 in the entire nation — and launched a goal to plant 500,000 trees citywide.

Today, Irvine has approximately 550,000 trees and a 22 percent tree canopy. Building on that legacy, the City is now working toward a 30 percent canopy by 2055.

To help reach that goal, the City has launched two new programs giving residents opportunities to grow Irvine’s urban forest.

Kathleen Treseder Removed from Irvine’s Affordable Housing Nonprofit Board

The Irvine Community Land Trust (ICLT) is a nonprofit organization that was established in 2006 by the City of Irvine to develop and preserve permanent, low-cost housing for working families and individuals. Over the past two decades, the Land Trust has provided thousands of Irvine families with high-quality affordable housing units.

On September 21, the Land Trust board voted to remove Irvine Councilmember Kathleen Treseder from the ICLT board.

The Board stated that Ms. Treseder was removed for cause after she conditioned her support for a new affordable housing project on the removal of a director with whom she did not get along and then stopped attending Land Trust meetings when the Board refused her demand.

The City’s Free Grocery Food Box Program Needs Volunteers

September is Hunger Action Month!

To help address food insecurity in Irvine, the City — in collaboration with Community Action Partnership of Orange County — offers free 30-pound grocery food boxes each month to income-eligible residents.

The grocery food boxes contain a variety of dried beans, fresh produce, canned and frozen vegetables, fruit/vegetable juice, meat (when available), poultry, fish, nuts, milk, cheese, rice, cereal, and pasta.

The success of the program depends on dozens of volunteers who assist with four key events: food drop-off, packaging food boxes, food distribution, and food box delivery (for those without transportation). More volunteers are needed to help with this critical program.
