Irvine High School’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest takes the stage September 30 thru October 3.
The classic comedy follows Jack Worthing (senior Jonathan Velarde) and Algernon Moncrieff (junior Curtis Li), two young men who invent fictional identities to escape social obligations. Their deceptions grow increasingly complicated when Algernon poses as Ernest to pursue Jack’s ward, Cecily Cardew (junior Krishali Patel), while Jack courts Gwendolen Fairfax (senior Ayaana Khan) under the same name.
The cast brings each character’s personality to life: Velarde portrays Jack’s seriousness, Li embraces Algernon’s carefree mischief, Khan gives Gwendolen confidence and determination, and Patel adds playful charm to Cecily.
An animated ensemble of household staff appears throughout all three acts, serving as “living scenery” while adding humor and unexpected moments for audiences to discover.
More than 130 years after its debut, Wilde’s witty dialogue and exaggerated social conventions continue to delight the cast. The production also highlights students’ talents, supported by the technical precision of the scenic and props crew.
