Publisher’s Perspective: OCPA’s Continued Broken Promises

OCPA was established by local politicians who wanted so badly to be seen by voters as “green” leaders that they created the agency — even though they had no understanding of the complex electricity market or the financial burden they were placing on our City’s taxpayers and electricity ratepayers.

Irvine’s representatives on the OCPA board — Councilmembers Tammy Kim and Kathleen Treseder — recently announced that OCPA has delivered  “100% renewable” electricity to its Irvine customers. That’s simply not true!

There is not a separate transmission line pumping 100% renewable electricity into the homes of OCPA customers. Everyone in the state receives power from the same source — the California electricity grid.

According to the California Energy Commission, the California electricity grid delivers 54.23% green energy from non-Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emitting sources and renewables.

Councilmembers Kim and Treseder also proclaim that OCPA is “2% cheaper than Southern California Edison (SCE),” even though they know that the cheaper rate applies only to the handful of electricity customers who have “opted-down” to OCPA’s lowest renewable tier (Basic Choice). Kim and Treseder never mention that Irvine households were forced into the highest tier (labeled “100% Renewable”) — which is on average $36 per month more than SCE’s 100% renewable plan.

Council Votes Down Proposal by Vice Mayor Kim to Support Anaheim Event with $50,000 from Irvine’s COVID Federal Funds

The City Council shot down a request by Vice Mayor Tammy Kim to have the City of Irvine contribute $50,000 for an event that will be held in Anaheim next month.

Kim’s request to contribute the money in return for booth space at the World Korean Business Convention was considered at the Council’s September 26th meeting.

The convention is being hosted by the Overseas Koreans Foundation (an affiliate of the Korean Foreign Ministry); Overseas Koreans Economic Organizations; and the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Orange County.

Kim’s request was criticized by public commenters as subsidizing an event outside of Irvine and with no strong connection to the City.

Mayor Farrah Khan, along with Councilmembers Larry Agran and Mike Carroll echoed the public’s concerns while also questioning the propriety of using Irvine Recovery Fund money for the event. That fund consists of federal dollars that the City received to help it recover from the COVID pandemic.

Irvine Artist Minna Chow’s Beautiful Brushed Paintings are on Display at Lakeview Senior Center

Longtime Irvine resident and artist, Minna Chow is sharing some of her beautiful brushed paintings with the community through an exhibit at the Lakeview Senior Center through October 31st.

Minna began her love of brush painting as a young child in China, with guidance from her mother. She went on to study Chinese language and literature during college, where she learned different styles of calligraphy and Chinese brush painting techniques. This traditional art form is steeped in history, with each piece created in your own “handwriting,” each stamped unconsciously with your own style. In China, it’s very fittingly described as “writing the picture.”

Minna is a member of the American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting (AACBP) and the Orange County Chinese Art Association (OCCAA). Her work has been featured in a number of art exhibitions across Orange County — including our local libraries and the Great Park. Last year, Minna’s paintings were featured at an art exhibit at John Wayne Airport.
