The City to Spend Taxpayer Money to Rename Great Park … Without Asking for Community Input

At their July 27th meeting, the Great Park Board of Directors — consisting of all five Irvine City Councilmembers — voted 4-1 to officially rename the Orange County Great Park. (Councilmember Agran was the sole No vote.)

Known to most people only as the “Great Park,” Mayor Khan and City Councilmembers Kim, Kuo and Carroll voted to rename the park the “Irvine Great Park.” The name change could cost taxpayers upwards of a million dollars — to change all of the official documents, signage, and marketing materials.

Councilmember Agran — who voted against the name change and has been skeptical about corporate sponsorships — insisted that “before the City commits to what would likely be a multi-million-dollar name change, a thorough staff report should be prepared for City Council and community review.”

Is the Long-Promised State Veterans Cemetery in Irvine Dead? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Recent articles in major media have misleadingly stated or implied that the long-planned State Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery on the “ARDA” site at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in the Great Park is dead.

On the contrary, the ARDA site remains the only legally available site for a State Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery.

Despite continuing propaganda from developer FivePoint and their surrogates, Irvine residents have always supported the 125-acre ARDA site.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Isn’t Over Yet … And Our Children Are Most at Risk

Over the past month, California and Orange County cases of COVID-19 have increased. As the CDC has repeated, this is now a pandemic largely of the unvaccinated.

As long as there are unvaccinated individuals, the highly contagious and highly transmissible Delta variant will continue to spread throughout the community, and new variants will continue to emerge.

In order to stop the spread of this deadly virus once and for all, we must encourage everyone we know to get vaccinated, including children 12 years of age and older.

Disrespecting Voters. Disrespecting Democracy.

Later this year, Irvine will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Historically, voters and City leaders in Irvine have shared a mutual respect for one another. Voters have trusted that the people they send to City Hall to represent them will do just that … represent the will of the people. And, previous City leaders have respected the voters enough to implement the will of the people.

However, respect for voters and respect for our local democracy seems to be disappearing in Irvine. For example, the Mayor’s undemocratic “Rule of Two” — requiring two Councilmembers to put matters on the Council agenda — has resulted in the Council refusing to even talk to the voters about critical issues that directly impact thousands of Irvine residents.
