Last year, I reported that volunteering leads to better health…at any age. A volunteer I highlighted, Ed McNew is now 88 years old. He was, by far, the top signature gatherer for the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery Initiative Petition. He said, at the time, “It gives me purpose, and it’s something I look forward to every day.”
This year, Ed is an important member of the Build the Great Park Veterans Cemetery steering committee that meets via Zoom weekly, which continues to keep him busy and healthy.

After a 6-year hiatus, Larry Agran, former Irvine Mayor and Councilmember, is running for City Council because, in his words, “I want to restore good planning, safeguard our City-owned parklands, get COVID-19 under control here in Irvine, and implement the mandate of the voters to immediately begin construction of the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery at the ARDA site in our 1,300-acre Great Park.”
The Shea-Carroll plan is to bring office, commercial, and industrial development to the Great Park…and thousands of cars to the site every day.

My entire professional life in public health and as a pediatrician has been dedicated to the prevention of disease wherever possible, and to delivering appropriate medical interventions whenever necessary. For me, diagnosing and treating an individual patient for a disease is very rewarding.
But, even more rewarding for me — and the real payoff for society — is when we institute policies and organize our resources to prevent the spread of disease.
