The National Institute of Justice has awarded a $780,000 grant to UCI Psychological Science Department Professor Elizabeth Cauffman for her work with the Orange County Young Adult Court (YAC).
The Orange County YAC was established through the efforts of Professor Cauffman, in collaboration with the Orange County Superior Court, the District Attorney’s Office, the Orange County Probation Department, defense attorneys, and the Orangewood Foundation.
The grant will fund the first randomized control trial in the country of a YAC with the goal of decreasing recidivism and preventing criminal behavior in offenders between the ages of 18 and 25.
Offenders who successfully complete the program could receive an earlier end to their probation or the reduction/dismissal of a felony conviction.
