Two Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) high school seniors — Matthew Chang (Woodbridge High School) and Yuyu “Winnie” Wei (Northwood High School) — have received a $50,000 scholarship from Edison International as 2025 Edison Scholars.
The scholarships will be paid over four years, to help Matthew and Winnie pursue a college education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math).
For the past five years, Matthew has worked in environmental research at UCI, identifying biomarkers in plants affected by increasing global temperatures and engineering fungi to harness their untapped carbon capture potential. He plans to continue his work by studying Environmental Science when he heads off to college this fall.
Winnie has been researching the challenges and benefits of solar panel sustainability — discovering how older solar panels can degrade quickly and disposal often poses challenges due to toxic materials. She plans to continue her research through her studies in Applied Mathematics after high school.
Congratulations to both of these talented Irvine students!
