Julie Zeoli has been named Irvine’s first-ever City Librarian, as plans ramp up for the City to take over its library services from Orange County next year.
Zeoli has been assistant library director for Yorba Linda, and was deeply involved in creating that city’s award-winning Library & Arts Center that opened in 2020.
“I’m excited to have Julie leading the development of our own library system,” said City Manager Oliver Chi. “I can’t wait to see all she does to help us develop the best library operation that exists anywhere in the country.”
“I am deeply honored to serve as Irvine’s first City Librarian,” Zeoli said. “Public libraries are truly the anchor of a community and contribute to essential public programs and services. I look forward to working with the talented team here, developing a world-class library system, and fostering ideas and experiences that will enrich the lives of Irvine residents.”
Currently, the three public libraries in the City — Heritage Park Library, University Park Library, and Katie Wheeler Library — are operated by the Orange County Public Library. Back in July, the City Council voted to create a City library system instead.
Initially, the Library Services Division of the City’s Community Services Department will operate the three current libraries. But, Chi says officials are looking to improve those libraries and expand services, and are discussing adding new libraries in areas that are now underserved. Zeoli and City staff will work with residents — including holding a number of public meetings — to develop library facilities and services that meet the needs and desires of the community, he said.
Zeoli joined the City of Yorba Linda in 2006 and served in various roles, including teen services librarian, adult services manager and assistant library director. She has demonstrated a commitment to customer-centric, high-quality library services that foster a sense of community, Chi said, and the ability to build connections with local organizations, schools and businesses to enhance library programming.
