On November 14th, city and state officials, community leaders and the Irvine Eagles Special Olympics Basketball Team were on hand for the official opening of the Sweet Shade Universal Playground — designed to meet the needs of all Irvine residents, regardless of ability. The playground is located at the Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park (15 Sweet Shade).
Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan said the new playground is “a vibrant reflection of our City’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring all residents have access to equitable services and opportunities.”
Irvine Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris was instrumental in securing $2.8 million in state funding for the universal playground, enabling its creation. “This investment reflects my commitment to creating spaces where every child can thrive, while fostering a love for learning and promoting accessibility,” she said. “I hope Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park will be a model for future projects that prioritize inclusivity.”
Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park totals 7.9 acres. Since 2019, the park has been the home of the Sweet Shade Ability Center, which is a hub of activities for individuals with sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities and their families.
The new universal playground enhances the Center’s recreational offerings for all Irvine residents regardless of ability. It is wheelchair accessible with multi-generational play components to support usage by those with disabilities, as well as their parents and caregivers.
It has been several years in the making. Soon after the opening of the Sweet Shade Ability Center, the City began looking at the development of a universal playground at Sweet Shade. In 2022, the $2.8 million in state funding was obtained, and detailed planning with extensive public outreach began.
The resulting plan was accepted by the Irvine Residents with Disabilities Advisory Board and the Community Services Commission. It features an outer space theme and includes adaptive swings; a bankshot basketball court with creatively angled, curved, and uniquely configured basketball backboards; a sensory garden; and an adjacent restroom with an adult changing area.
“I am so excited to see this new playground serve as a place of joy, inclusivity, and connection,” said Khan, “where family members of all ages and abilities can come together and create meaningful memories.”
