According to the Irvine Police Department (IPD), e-bike crashes are on the rise throughout our City. Speed and unsafe riding conditions are the primary causes of collisions.
In just the past year, there has been a significant increase in bicycle collisions, with 74% involving e-bike riders between the ages of 13 and 15.
During a recent High-Visibility Enforcement detail in and around the Great Park, IPD issued numerous safety-related tickets and administrative citations, allowing riders to take a bike safety course instead of paying a fine. Three e-motorcycles were impounded. IPD continues to strictly enforce all laws related to e-motorcycles.
Here are a few reminders to keep everyone safe:
- Ride your e-bike in the same direction as traffic.
- All riders and passengers under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. (Everyone should wear a helmet!)
- Passengers must be on a separate and attached passenger seat. (Luggage racks cannot be used as a seat.)
- Watch your speed. Higher speeds lead to more severe injuries.
