It looks like the shift to district elections for the Irvine City Council is proving to be a boost for local democracy, as claimed by proponents of the change.
Sixteen potential candidates in four Council districts and 7 potential candidates for mayor have taken out nomination papers from the City Clerk’s office. (In 2022, just six candidates vied for Council seats, with five contesting the mayoral race.)

The District 1 election is for a two-year term; the other three district elections are for four-year terms. The mayor serves a two-year term and is elected by all voters in the city.
The filing period for the November 2024 election closed on August 9th.
