On August 3rd, the City of Irvine celebrated the official opening of its new City-run public library system, with more than 1,200 residents in attendance.
Under the previous library system, Irvine taxpayers were contributing roughly $17 million to the Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL). However, the libraries operated by OCPL in Irvine were receiving only $5 million annually in services.
As a result of the funding unfairness, Irvine residents were being underserved by the City’s three small library locations: Heritage Park Library in the center of our City, University Park Library in the southern part of Irvine, and Katie Wheeler Library in the northwest corner.
Based on the City’s population, industry standards, and community needs, the new Irvine Public Library system should expand from its current 40,000 square feet to approximately 220,000 square feet.
The anticipated expansion plan is likely to include a 110,000-square-foot main library at the Great Park, a 40,000-square-foot library at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park, and possible expansion of the City’s three existing libraries. These upgrades in our new Irvine library system will provide space for larger collections, expanded programming areas, meeting rooms, study spaces, crafting spaces, local history exhibits, art galleries, Friends of the Library bookstores, and a host of other amenities.
The first step in the planning process is understanding local needs, which will inform future collections, programs, services, and locations. Community input will be essential in ensuring that Irvine ends up with a library system that best serves its residents.
Throughout the planning process, members of the community will have opportunities to share their ideas, insights, and experiences that are essential to shaping the future of the Irvine Public Library.
