Four talented students from Beckman High School — Bethany Cheung, Sophie Tsai, Andrea Lin, and Shannon Tsai — are providing free piano lessons to local children who could not otherwise afford them.
As competitive classical pianists, the Beckman students recognized that many kids were unable to explore music because of the high costs of lessons, quality instruments, and maintenance.
To bridge the gap, they established a nonprofit, Project Con Brio, and began partnering with the Thomas House Family Shelter, the OC Rescue Mission, and the HomeAid Shelter to provide high-quality piano lessons to underprivileged youth who do not have the financial means to pay for music training.
The mission of these teen volunteers goes beyond teaching piano. The goal is to equip young children with the ability to read and explore music independently, inspiring creativity and confidence.
The student teachers enjoy crafting lessons that combine traditional training techniques with more creative adaptations. For example, they often include simple games — including Pictionary and mini paper basketball — to solidify topics such as note naming and reading the treble staff.
