Residents and visitors now have a new way to get around Irvine with the launch of the City’s first fixed-station Bike Share Pilot Program.
On June 16th, City officials unveiled the program during a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community bike ride — marking Irvine’s entry into the growing network of cities offering public bike-share services as an alternative transportation option.
The pilot begins with two stations located at the Irvine Civic Center (1 Civic Center Plaza) and University Town Center (4255 Campus Drive). The system includes 20 Class 1 pedal-assist bicycles and two docking stations. Riders can travel at assisted speeds of up to 18 miles per hour, with each bicycle capable of traveling more than 30 miles on a single charge. Membership options include monthly, annual, and pay-as-you-go plans.
The launch represents a new chapter in Irvine’s transportation landscape as the City continues to explore ways to expand mobility options and reduce reliance on vehicle trips. City leaders say bike share can help improve connections between destinations while supporting broader sustainability goals.
“Providing access to pedal-assisted bicycles offers exciting benefits for Irvine,” said Mayor Larry Agran. “Not only does the Bike Share Pilot Program support the City’s sustainability goals, but it also provides residents, students, and visitors with a practical, convenient, and environmentally friendly way to travel throughout our City.”
Over the coming months, the City will track ridership patterns, usage data, and overall system performance to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. The findings will help determine whether additional stations or expanded service could be considered in the future.
