Explore Irvine’s Wilderness Safely

by ICNV Staff

The City of Irvine is surrounded by more than 10,000 acres of wilderness for residents to enjoy year-round. If you haven’t explored the Irvine Open Space Preserve, make plans now to experience the breathtaking sights waiting to be discovered this summer.

Whether you are hiking, mountain biking, or simply strolling through the native wildlands, be sure to take a few precautions to ensure an enjoyable outing.

Make safety part of your adventure by following these important guidelines:

  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Bring plenty of water to remain hydrated.
  • Wear sunscreen and protective clothing to shield yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Opting for lighter-colored and breathable clothing helps regulate your body temperature.
  • Before heading outdoors alone, be sure to inform someone of your route and your expected return time.
  • During summer months, plan outdoor activities early in the morning or before sunset when temperatures are cooler.
  • Know your limits and listen to your body to avoid heat-related illnesses like heatstroke.
  • Watch where you step or place your hands, especially near rocks or brush.

Irvine’s open spaces are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including rattlesnakes. If you encounter a snake, give it plenty of space and never attempt to approach, touch, or move it. If a rattlesnake bites you, remain calm, stay where you are, and call 911 for immediate help. According to the California Poison Control System, you should not apply ice or heat, cut the bite, suck out venom, or use a tourniquet. Do not take medications, and do not consume alcohol or caffeine.

The City has created a video with additional tips to help you prepare and stay safe in Irvine’s open spaces, as well as a Know Before You Go interactive dashboard featuring a list of open space trails, mile markers, trailheads, weather forecasts, and more. Check it out here.
