High School football in Southern California continues postseason under the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section football playoffs.
Congratulations to the teams from Beckman High School and Woodbridge High School on their CIF Football Championship wins!
It was the first win for Beckman in its school history, and the first win for Woodbridge since the 1990s.
Due to the number of high school football teams in Southern California, teams are divided into 14 different divisions based on their power rankings (the size of the school and the strength of the teams they compete against). The stronger teams play in the upper divisions. Teams make it into the playoffs by winning their league or by receiving at-large bids into the CIF postseason tournaments.
The Beckman High School Patriots, coached by Marcello Giuliano, finished first in the Lambda League for the regular season. The team then went on to compete in the Division 8 CIF championship game where they beat Brea Olinda High School in a thrilling overtime victory, winning 30-24. The team moved on to compete in regional playoffs, where they defeated Hillcrest High School 46-40 in the final minutes of the game to capture the Regional 4-A Championship.
Across town, Woodbridge received a surprise at-large bid to compete in the CIF playoffs after tying for third place in their Omicron League during the regular season. The team competed in Division 13 and remarkably made it all the way to the finals, beating Montebello High School in a nail biter 24-23 win.
The Woodbridge Warriors are now slated to compete in the State Regional 7 AA Final on Saturday, December 13th at 11am against Redding Christian High School. The game will be played at Fullerton High School.
The Warriors are led by first-year coach and Irvine native Connor McBride. At just 27 years of age, McBride is one of the youngest head coaches in all of Southern California and the youngest here in Orange County. Coach McBride, who was a standout football player himself when he attended Woodbridge High is also a history teacher. Keeping it all in the family, Connor’s sister Kylie, a fellow Warriors grad, is the head Cheer Coach for the school.
Congratulations to both the Beckman High School and Woodbridge High School football teams on their remarkable seasons!
