Irvine has a new City Manager. On October 28th, the City Council unanimously approved the hiring of Sean Crumby, who has more than three decades of executive leadership experience in municipal government.

Mr. Crumby had been serving as interim City Manager after Irvine’s former City Manager Oliver Chi accepted a position in Santa Monica.

A registered Civil Engineer, Crumby was brought in by Chi in April 2023 to serve as the City’s first Director of Project Delivery & Sustainability, where he was responsible for managing and implementing hundreds of millions of dollars in projects annually.

Under Crumby’s leadership, a number of important projects quickly moved forward. In his first year, he saw to it that City Hall’s parking lots would soon be transformed into solar-power generating centers. He also accelerated construction of a new Animal Care Center after the design contract had been approved. (Click here to watch a short video about the construction progress at the Animal Care Center.) In addition, construction began on a soon-to-be-opened, 1200-foot pedestrian & bicycle bridge spanning the 5 Freeway to link the north and south legs of the popular Jeffrey Open Space Trail.

In December 2024, Mr. Crumby was promoted to Assistant City Manager where he has led the development of the Great Park while continuing to oversee the City’s public works, transportation, and sustainability operations.

When discussing the new City Manager, Mayor Larry Agran said: “Sean has demonstrated strong leadership, sound judgment, and a deep commitment to the City of Irvine. He brings a results-driven approach to leadership, focused on delivering high-quality projects and meaningful outcomes for our community. The Council has full confidence in his ability to guide Irvine forward with the professionalism, innovation, and integrity that define our organization. We look forward to continuing to work closely with him as we advance Irvine’s vision for the future.”

After the Council’s vote, Crumby said: “It has been a privilege to serve the Irvine community in an interim capacity, and I am both humbled and honored to continue as Irvine’s next City Manager. I am deeply grateful to the City Council for their confidence, to our dedicated staff for their professionalism, and to our residents for their trust. It’s an incredible honor to help lead this great city, one that continues to set the standard for innovation, sustainability, and quality of life.”
