Community Feedback Requested on the City’s Draft Climate Action & Adaptation Plan

by ICNV Staff

In 2021, the Irvine City Council voted to develop its first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). A draft of the plan is now available for community review and feedback.

According to the City, this years-in-the-making plan sets ambitious but achievable goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate impacts like wildfires, and create a sustainable, resilient future for all who live, work, and visit Irvine.

It is important to note that the CAAP promotes broad policy objectives, but does not approve, allocate funding, or authorize implementation of any specific project. Each proposed project in the CAAP will need to be reviewed and approved individually.

Even without the CAAP, the City has already moved forward this year with a number of items to address climate change — including the expansion of the free Irvine CONNECT bus service, protected bikeways, and the addition of new school bus routes to get more cars off the road; the Mayor’s tree planting program to clean the air, cool our City, and provide much-needed shade throughout Irvine; and the Mayor’s proposal for a rooftop solar and battery storage program, which will help the City meet its carbon reduction goals while drastically reducing (or even eliminating) sky-rocketing electricity bills.

To review the draft CAAP and share your input, click here. (Comments must be received by Friday, October 3rd at 5pm.)
