Construction Begins for Irvine’s First Municipal Gymnasium

Groundbreaking ceremony for Irvine’s first municipal gymnasium

Land that could have been approved for a massive warehouse will now become home to a new 110,000-square-foot recreational facility in the Irvine Business Complex (IBC), at 17300 Red Hill Avenue.

The Irvine Fieldhouse — scheduled to open to the public next year — will become Irvine’s first municipal gym. Designed to meet residents’ needs, the facility will be equipped for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and serve as a hub for City-run programs, youth sports tournaments, and community events.

The Fieldhouse will include 10 multi-purpose courts, 10 badminton courts, a multipurpose room, a food court, and much more, as well as 369 parking spaces.

Last year, the City Council voted unanimously to approve the project, and construction began earlier this week.

Funding for the new gymnasium will come from a parks fund that is dedicated to park uses within the IBC and nearby neighborhoods.

During this week’s groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Larry Agran stated: “Together, we are building more than a gym. We are creating a space that brings our community together in meaningful ways, promotes health and well-being, and ensures we maintain an outstanding quality of life for residents.”

Agran continued: “I am glad that we have been able to replace what could have been a massive warehouse with something that residents throughout our City have requested to improve their quality of life. A recent study showed that 84% of Irvine residents participate in physical activities, and our City has the seventh-highest life expectancy in the nation. Irvine has the second best park system in America and we have more than 10,000 acres of open space for residents to enjoy outdoor activities. What we have been missing is adequate indoor recreational space. The new Irvine Fieldhouse helps to fulfill that need.”
