Street racing and excessively loud vehicles have become an ongoing issue in Irvine. Street racing puts lives at risk and damages roadways. Together with the excessive noise from revving engines and illegal exhaust modifications, these issues undermine Irvine’s quality of life.
At the June 22nd City Council meeting, Councilmember Larry Agran (with support from Councilmember Anthony Kuo) requested the Irvine Police Department (IPD) present a community update to explain what steps our police department is taking to address the dangers associated with street racing.
IPD sergeants Garrett Gales and Jasper Kim reported that Irvine has partnered with other Orange County agencies and is collaborating with the Orange County District Attorney’s office to ensure prosecution of street racing and intersection takeover suspects. IPD has also dramatically increased officer training to enforce the laws against modified exhaust systems and street racing activity.
