Arbor Day is a celebration of trees and the vital role they play in our world. Held on the last Friday in April, it stands apart from most holidays — rooted in hope for the future rather than remembrance of the past.
The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.
Mayor Larry Agran recently reminded residents that: “Trees do more than beautify our surroundings — they actively support a healthier planet. A single mature tree can absorb around 48 pounds of CO₂ every year. In one year, an acre of mature trees can absorb as much CO₂ as a car produces when driven 26,000 miles. It also cools your home, cutting AC use by 30%, makes neighborhoods up to 7-9°F cooler, and provides food, shelter, and a nesting site for hundreds of animals and insects.”
In recognition of Arbor Day, the City of Irvine has introduced two initiatives aimed at engaging the community in expanding and enhancing Irvine’s urban forest.
The Sponsor a Tree program offers residents, families, and organizations a meaningful way to contribute to Irvine’s green spaces. A $400 contribution supports the planting of trees in parks and other public spaces — enhancing the City’s tree canopy while establishing a lasting tribute for years to come. The program offers a meaningful way to honor loved ones, celebrate milestones, or mark special occasions — while supporting Irvine’s environmental goals and enhancing shared community spaces. Interested participants can fill out a Tree Sponsorship form and browse an interactive map showing available trees, sponsored locations, and personalized dedication messages.
The Residential Tree Giveaway Program — offered in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation — will provide free trees to qualifying Irvine residents for planting on their private property. The program is designed to increase neighborhood tree canopy coverage and encourage sustainable landscaping practices at home. Residents who participate will be able to reserve pre-approved, climate-appropriate tree species and receive guidance to support successful planting and long-term care.
