On August 3rd, the Heritage Park & University Park library branches reopened as part of the new Irvine Public Library system.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremonies, guests were treated to refreshments, live entertainment, and a host of family-friendly activities. Residents had the opportunity to explore the refreshed library spaces, connect with the staff, and sign up for a library card.
Last year, the Irvine City Council unanimously voted to transition library services from the Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL) and, instead, establish its own Irvine Public Library System. The Council’s decision came down to finances and services offered to the City’s residents. Irvine taxpayers were contributing roughly $17 million to OCPL every year. However, the libraries operated by OCPL in Irvine were receiving only $5 million annually in services. (Decades ago, the City established its own Irvine Police Department because of a similar funding imbalance.)
By establishing its own public library system, the City will save millions of taxpayer dollars; existing Irvine libraries will be expanded and modernized; and two or even three new Irvine libraries will be built in the years ahead, depending on the findings and recommendations of a Library Master Plan study expected to be completed later this year.
The new City-run library system will continue to provide the free programs Irvine residents count on each week while expanding services to meet the unique needs of our local community.
Irvine residents with valid OCPL cards will continue to have access to all County library services and programs online and at nearby branch libraries outside Irvine. Residents will need to request an Irvine Public Library card to use at all Irvine branch locations.
The Katie Wheeler Library — in West Irvine — is currently being renovated and is scheduled to reopen as part of the new Irvine Public Library System in early January.
