Our Remarkable, Award-Winning Planned Community

For 20 consecutive years, Irvine has been ranked as America’s “Safest Big City,” based on FBI crime statistics.

Irvine has been recognized for having the best park system in California and the second best in the United States. Irvine is also the fourth best place to raise a family; the fourth least stressed city; and the tenth healthiest community in America. In July, we were named Southern California’s best city for renters. No wonder we are ranked as the third happiest city in the nation!

None of these achievements happened by accident. They are the result of decades of meticulous planning and controlled-growth strategies. Most of our City’s leaders have prioritized quality of life, community, and environmental health over rapid expansion.

Irvine Has Lost One of Our Local Treasures: Ed Pope

Ed Pope was a man of integrity and a local treasure. He was a proud veteran, an award-winning high school teacher, a mentor for at-risk kids, and an advocate for local veterans and their families. He was also my friend. He passed away in mid-August from complications associated with a stroke he suffered six years ago.

Ed was born and raised in San Francisco. After earning his bachelor’s degree, in the early 1960s he served in the United States Army where he was assigned to the Seventh U.S. Army in Germany during construction of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile crisis.

The years he spent in the military helped to instill the values that shaped Ed’s later life. He once said that “the Army taught me a sense of duty, honor, and service to my country and my community.”

Community Feedback Requested on the City’s Draft Climate Action & Adaptation Plan

In 2021, the Irvine City Council voted to develop its first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). A draft of the plan is now available for community review and feedback.

According to the City, this years-in-the-making plan sets ambitious but achievable goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate impacts like wildfires, and create a sustainable, resilient future for all who live, work, and visit Irvine.

It is important to note that the CAAP promotes broad policy objectives, but does not approve, allocate funding, or authorize implementation of any specific project. Each proposed project in the CAAP will need to be reviewed and approved individually.

City of Irvine Seeks Public Input on Library Expansion

On August 3rd, the City of Irvine celebrated the official opening of its new City-run public library system, with more than 1,200 residents in attendance.

Under the previous library system, Irvine taxpayers were contributing roughly $17 million to the Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL). However, the libraries operated by OCPL in Irvine were receiving only $5 million annually in services, with Irvine residents being underserved by the City’s three small libraries.

The new library system should expand from its current 40,000 square feet to approximately 220,000 square feet.

The first step in the planning process is understanding local needs, which will inform future collections, programs, services, and locations. Community input will be essential in ensuring that Irvine ends up with a library system that best serves its residents.
