UCI Using Community College Pipelines to Increase Student Socioeconomic Diversity

by

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) has been recognized as a leader in using community college pipelines to increase student socioeconomic diversity.

The American Talent Initiative (ATI) is a nonprofit organization that brings top colleges and universities together with the philanthropy and research communities to expand access and opportunity for talented low- and moderate-income students.

ATI’s mission is to attract, enroll, and graduate an additional 50,000 lower-income students by 2025, at the 296 colleges and universities that consistently graduate at least 70 percent of their students in six years.  UCI is one of those 296 educational institutions.

The latest report from ATI named UCI a leader in the initiative’s commitment to socioeconomic diversity.

According to the report, in just five years, UCI increased the number of students who transferred from a community college by 75 percent.  In the fall of 2012, 1,702 students transferred to UCI from a community college.  By the fall of 2017, that number had increased to 2,957 students.
