UCI Serving Those Who Served

by

Did you know that the University of California at Irvine (UCI) serves those who have served our country, helping veterans return to civilian life and achieve academic success?

Long before the University of California established a campus here in Irvine, this area was best known for being home to the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro. For 60 years, the base served as the center for Marine Corps aviation on the West Coast.

With Irvine’s rich historical relationship with the former military base, it seems only appropriate that our city’s university would create a program to take care of our veterans and their families.  And that is exactly what they have done.

UCI is ranked No. 13 nationwide on U.S. News & World Report’s list of best colleges for veterans and was named a “top veteran-friendly school” this past summer by U.S. Veterans Magazine.

One of the reasons for that ranking is the fact that UCI guarantees housing for veterans and their families.  They are one of the only universities in the nation to provide that benefit.  They also offer priority registration to veterans, reservists, and their dependents.

UCI also has established a Veteran Services Center which submits entitlement requests for new and continuing students to the V.A., answers any questions veteran students or dependents may have concerning their educational benefits, and provides resources and programs to assist veterans in navigating their transition to civilian and student life.

The Veterans Service Center (located at the UCI Student Center) is open Monday through Friday from 9am until 5pm.

The university recently spotlighted a few of the hundreds of veterans who have been able to take advantage of the services UCI provides.   To read the profiles, click here.
