Save the Great Park Veterans Cemetery! Sign our Petition!

by

Hundreds of Irvine residents continue to stand up and speak out — by signing the Great Park Veterans Cemetery Petition.  More than 1,000 have signed so far, with about 100 new signers each week.

This surge of Petition signers is in reaction to the City Council’s very unpopular June 6th vote — 3-to-2 — to refuse $30 million in State funding and halt construction of the 125-acre Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park.

Instead, Mayor Donald Wagner and Councilmembers Christina Shea and Melissa Fox have announced their intention — and are scheduling action for an upcoming City Council meeting — to give away the 125-acre Great Park Veterans Cemetery site to developer FivePoint Communities, along with zoning approval for massive office, commercial and residential development that will bring tens of thousands of additional cars to north Irvine every day.

If you have not already done so, please take this opportunity to join your friends and neighbors in signing the Great Park Veterans Cemetery Petition.  Add your name and comments in support of this important cause, and ask your friends and neighbors to sign the Petition, too.  Click here to sign the petition

Published below are just a few of the hundreds of comments recently received from petition signers:

  • Keep the Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park, where it was originally planned. My father is a Vietnam veteran, and I would love for him to get his wish to have the Cemetery on the old Marine Corps Airbase.  Let’s respect our veterans’ wishes.  Please don’t let FivePoint win.

— April Rulon

  • One can’t help but wonder why three elected officials would stake their reputations on this land-swap, contrary to the wishes of most Irvine citizens and blatantly ignoring the sentiments of our esteemed veterans who prefer and deserve a resting place in the Great Park, as originally planned and approved. We are left shaking our heads wondering what FivePoint has offered these three.  People don’t bend over backward for developers unless there is some positive reinforcement in the offing — perhaps promised support for future political aspirations?

— Jean Anne Turner

  • Thank you Councilmembers Lalloway and Schott for holding-out for the residents — and especially for the veterans of Irvine.

— Debra Richardson

  • This deal with FivePoint should NOT happen! Irvine needs to stick with the original City Council plan from July 2014 — build the Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery in the Great Park to honor those who have fought for our country.  Do NOT give FivePoint or any developer any deal at the expense of Irvine residents or veterans or veterans’ families.

— Edward Uy

  • I have just moved to Irvine because it is such a beautiful place to live. The Great Park is one of Irvine’s special places, and it belongs to the residents and not the developers.  I favor the Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park as a beautiful part of my new community.

— Patricia Anderson
