The University of California, Irvine (UCI) announced that Assistant Professor of Physics & Astronomy, Huolin Xin, has been awarded a $2.5 million research grant by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance his team’s groundbreaking work in next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Professor Xin’s DOE-funded research focuses on developing a three-dimensional doping method in high-nickel, low-cobalt materials – with the ultimate goal of reducing costs and improving the safety, energy density and longevity of mobile energy storage.
Xin, who joined UCI’s faculty earlier this year, is an expert in the application of artificial intelligence-driven transmission electron microscopy and state-of-the-art 3-D chemical imaging in the study of batteries, fuel cells and gas reduction electrocatalysts.
Xin’s research will be a critical component to addressing climate change, as the global automobile fleet transitions to electric versus internal combustion motors, requiring better materials and technologies for battery storage.
