Let’s Go Outside!
Did you know that there are nearly 40,000 acres of open space on the historic Irvine Ranch that have been designated a Natural Landmark by both the State of California and the U.S. Department of the Interior?
The Irvine Ranch Open Space consists of protected wildlands, including six nature preserves. For example, Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve is often referred to as a “mini Grand Canyon” because of its breathtaking scenery.
OC Parks stewards these special lands in close coordination with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy as land management contractor and The Nature Conservancy, a conservation organization.
Together, these three organizations offer educational and recreational opportunities for all ages.
There are free hiking, biking, and equestrian group activities. There are also special programs designed to teach children about the importance of protecting our Open Space land and our local wildlife. In addition, the community can sign up to help with stewardship of the land by pitching in and helping to keep the trails clean, planting native seeds, counting migratory birds, and removing invasive plants that threaten the region.
