Ideas exploring mortality, vulnerability, loss, and survival has become thematic to Joseph Paul Gerges’ current body of work. Begun during a period of great adversity in the artist’s life, these delicate anthropomorphic compositions mirror the manifold casualties of human hardship. The animal tableaus are inquiries into the aftermath of these experiences – surveying the damages for both the innocent and the culpable. Through his vulnerability, Gerges grants permission for our adversities and imperfections to become the celebrated marker of our diverse individuality and shared human experiences. The prints serve as a tactile visual symbol – a mirror reflecting the innermost strength and determination of the human spirit to overcome and embrace hardship as a means of propelling us forward as our highest selves.
