Developer Proposes 1,700 Added Apartments

by

This Tuesday, February 28th, the Irvine City Council will be conducting a “Scoping Session” — the first step in the City’s approval process for a General Plan Amendment that would grant new residential entitlement to the Irvine Company to undertake massive additional apartment development. Specifically, the Irvine Company seeks to build 1,710 apartment units on a 69.4 acre parcel of land at Sand Canyon and the I-5 Freeway.

Known as the former Traveland USA site — where, for decades, RV’s were sold, leased, serviced and stored — the site is located across Sand Canyon from Denny’s and Knolwood restaurants in Old Town Irvine. So, in an area of town already choking with traffic, the Irvine Company proposes to build more than 1,700 apartment units, housing about 5,000 additional people, who will bring with them about 3,500 cars that generate more than 10,000 added local automobile trips every day.

In his State of the City message, Mayor Donald Wagner promised he would insist that no new development rights be granted if the additional residential growth worsened Irvine’s traffic crisis. Councilmember Melissa Fox has said that the City Council “will need to hold developers accountable for resolving traffic issues before more entitlements and building permits are issued.”

It will be interesting to learn what Mayor Wagner, Councilmember Fox, and their Council colleagues have to say at the Scoping Session. The City Council meeting and Scoping Session, open to the public, begins at 4:00 p.m. at the Irvine City Hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza, corner of Harvard and Alton.
